Week 6 - David Pereira - Workshop Planning

Workshop Preparation

To begin working on the Second Development Cycle, each group member was tasked with designing a workshop with several activities to create and discuss new ideas and tweak the game. I suggested having an introductory Card Sorting activity, to have the Focus Group members group cards with concepts and familiarize them with different aspects of the game, whilst creating discussion and an unbiased organized view of the elements present in Deuce’s Tower. After the Card Sorting activity, the participants would be given 16 minutes to create 8 quick sketches on how they would like to have that information presented and how they would interact with it. After the 16 minutes are elapsed, each participant would choose their 3 favorite sketches and explain them. To finalize the activity, participants would then vote on their 3 favorite ideas (Zen Voting).

After a lot of group discussion, the group settled on a Final Workshop Plan:

  1. Icebreaker
  • Find the Commonality
  • Ask everyone to comment on their favorite games
  1. Contextualize
  • Prototype presentation
  • Specific questions and discussion
  • Limited Thinking Hats (One participant creates an idea, the second lists benefits, the third lists difficulties, and the fourth lists facts and what is needed)
  1. 5-minute break
  2. Decide
  • Questions with Kahoot
  1. Create
  • Create 1 ability per described class
  • Discuss the decisions of the Kahoot questions
  1. Decide
  • Zen Voting of Step 5’s ideas

The Workshop has an estimated duration of around 1h:50 and contains a lot of activities that are essential to creating new ideas. We are having 2 sessions, one today (16th of April) at 4 p.m. in English, and one tomorrow (17th of April) at 5 p.m. in Portuguese, to ensure that our Focus Group members are comfortable speaking.
